Forms report payments; your books report the business

1099-NEC vs. 1099-K for Gig Drivers

The forms can cover different payment flows and thresholds. If you are learning how to calculate taxes on a 1099 form, start by reconciling both forms to gross receipts, platform statements, deposits, and your own records before calculating profit.

What each form is designed to report

Form 1099-NEC generally reports qualifying nonemployee compensation paid directly by a business. Form 1099-K generally reports qualifying payment-card and third-party-network transactions handled by a payment settlement entity.

A platform’s payment structure determines which form or forms you may receive. The form label does not change the requirement to report all taxable business receipts.

2026 federal reporting thresholds

For calendar-year 2026, a payer generally files Form 1099-NEC for at least $2,000 of nonemployee compensation. For a third-party settlement organization, the federal Form 1099-K threshold requires both gross payments strictly over $20,000 and strictly over 200 transactions; payment-card transactions follow different rules.

These are information-return rules for the payer, not amounts you may omit from Schedule C. Platforms may also issue a form below a federal threshold, and state reporting rules can differ.

Where to route platform-specific tax-form questions

Platform menus change, and each issuer describes its own download path. Use the dedicated task guide for the current DoorDash, Uber, or Lyft retrieval steps rather than copying one platform’s menu into a generic form comparison.

For DoorDash tax forms, see the Dasher retrieval and reconciliation checklist. For Uber tax forms, see the Driver Dashboard and app tax-information paths. For Lyft tax documents, see the Lyft dashboard document workflow.

Whichever platform you use, save the form and annual summary, record the tax year and retrieval date, and reconcile gross receipts, fees, tips, refunds, deposits, and your own ledger before estimating profit.

Reconcile without double-counting

Match forms to annual platform summaries and your bookkeeping. Check whether a form reflects gross customer payments while the platform summary separately shows commissions, fees, refunds, or adjustments. The 1099 tax calculator starts only after this reconciliation.

Do not add the same receipt twice simply because it appears on two documents. Record gross receipts once and record eligible fees once.

What to do when a form is wrong

Contact the issuer promptly and keep documentation of the correction request. Do not alter an information form yourself.

If a corrected form will not arrive before filing, consider professional advice about how to report the correct business amount and preserve your reconciliation evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I receive both forms from one platform?

It is possible when different payment streams are reported under different information-return rules. Reconcile each document to the platform’s annual statement and your books.

What if I earn below the threshold?

Report taxable business income even if no information form was required. The threshold applies to the payer’s filing obligation, not your income-tax reporting duty.

Why is the form amount higher than my deposits?

A form may show gross customer payments before platform fees, refunds, or other adjustments. Reconcile the gross amount and separately record eligible business expenses.

Do tips appear on a 1099?

They may be included in a platform’s reported gross amount depending on the payment flow. Regardless of form presentation, business tips generally belong in your receipt reconciliation.

Should I use the 1099 amount directly in the calculator?

Use reconciled gross receipts for the modeled period. If the form includes amounts not belonging to your business—or omits receipts—resolve that before relying on it.

When does DoorDash make 1099 forms available?

DoorDash currently says eligible forms are available in the Dasher app by January 31. IRS rules generally require Form 1099-NEC payee statements and filings by January 31, with the next-business-day rule when the date falls on a weekend or legal holiday. A missing form does not make business receipts nonreportable; reconcile your records and contact the issuer when a form should be available.
